BIG PINK BUTTONS


Start


Start button



The "Start" Big Pink Button is used to start a game against the current opponent in the current play mode. The action is only available when you have a valid opponent (or you are just practicing) and a game is not currently in progress.

End


End button



The "End" Big Pink Button is used to stop playing a game that is underway, before the player or opponent has won.
The button can also be used to stop displaying the game tutorial before it has finished.

Set


Set button



The "Set" Big Pink Button is used to change the current game play mode or the current opponent. When you click on the "Set" Big Pink Button you are presented with the following screen that shows you the current settings for the game play mode and the opponent and allows you to change those settings.

Play Mode


Select the game play mode that you want from Columns/Normal/Fix-One/Mole by clicking on the circular marker next to the mode that you want.

Opponent


Select the opponent that you want from Nobody/Squiffy/Live Opponent (on this device)/Live Opponent (over Bluetooth)/Live Opponent (over the Internet) by clicking on the circular marker next to the opponent that you want.

Remember These Settings


Click in the box next to the "Remember these settings" label to have Squiffy remember the game play mode and opponent that you have selected the next time that the Q8 application is started.

Squiffy button



The "Squiffy" Big Pink Button is used to change settings that control what Squiffy does.

Drinking


Click on the box next to the "Allow a drink after a win" label to allow or not Squiffy to take a drink after he has won a game.
You can also use the slider below that label to control how drunk Squiffy currently is, towards the left Squiffy is more sober and towards the right Squiffy is more drunk.
As Squiffy gets more drunk his performance at the Q8 game gets worse and worse, he loses concentration or fixates on wrong moves. This deterioration in performance increases your chances of beating him.

This behaviour provides a salutary lesson, NEVER drink and drive or do anything that requires concentration.

Hints


Enter the number of hints that are allowed during each game in the box. When you are playing against a live opponent the number of hints must be agreed between the two players, just to make things fair.

Sounds


Click on the box next to the label "Background sound" to turn on or off the really annoying noise that Squiffy makes while waiting for a move.
Click on the box next to the label "Event sound" to turn on or off the sounds made when something significant happens in the Q8 game.

Remember These Settings


Click in the box next to the "Remember these settings" label to have Squiffy remember the game play mode and opponent that you have selected the next time that the Q8 application is started.

Quit


Quit button



The "Quit" Big Pink Button is used to shut down the Q8 application.

Tutor


Tutor button



The "Tutor" Big Pink Button is used to play a quick tutorial about the Q8 game. The tutorial function is only available when the Q8 application has been started and before the first game has been started. The tutorial displays particular game positions in the players (left hand) board and explains what is happening on the opponents (right hand) board.

Next


Next button



When displaying the tutorial use the "Next" Big Pink Button to display the next page of the tutorial.

Back


Back button



When the game boards are being displayed there are only four Big Pink Buttons, click on the "Back" Big Pink Button to stop displaying the game boards and return to the display with all eight Big Pink Buttons available. If the game boards are showing the tutorial then the "Back" button displays the previous page of the tutorial.

Assist


Assist button



Clicking on the "Assist" Big Pink Button will show each queen that can be taken in the current board arrangement. A marker is placed on each square that contains a queen that can be taken, the marker points to the queen that could take the marked one.

The "Assist" feature is always available no matter who you are playing against and there is no limit on the number of times that you can use it.

Hint


Hint button



Clicking on the "Hint" Big Pink Button asks Squiffy to tell you what his next move would be given your current board arrangement. The number of hints that squiffy is prepared to give during a game is limited, the default is two hints but you can change this value to anything you like. When you are playing against a live opponent then you both get the same number of hints. Let's see how this works, if you had the following board position.
Hint display



Then you click on the "Hint" Big Pink Button, Squiffy will determine the move that he would make next and mark the queen (or column) that he would select to move in green and show where he would move to by showing a queen in that position in blue.

You can then choose to accept the suggestion that Squiffy has been given by clicking on the blue queen. You can ignore the suggestion from Squiffy by clicking on the selected (green) queen, which will deselect it and the blue hint target queen will disappear, you can then make any move you like. If you click on the blue queen then the suggested move will be completed.

Squiffy plays the game in his own particular way so he may suggest a move that makes absolutely no sense to you and can throw you off your game, so use the "Hint" feature cautiously. You have been warned!

Undo


Undo button



The "Undo" Big Pink Button is used to take back the last move that you made. The undo feature is not available when you are playing against a live opponent. When the feature is available you only get access to it once you have made your first move.

Show


Show button



Click on the "Show" Big Pink Button to show the scores that you and your opponent have accumulated.
The "Intoximeter" shows how drunk Squiffy is, at 0 he is stone cold sober and at 100 he is as drunk as a skunk.

Do Not Press


Do Not Press button



The "Do Not Press" Big Pink Button is used to display a message telling you that you should not have pressed the button!

Accept


Accept button



The "Accept" Big Pink Button is used to allow an opponent on another computer to "Connect" to your computer to play a game with you.

Connect


Connect button



The "Connect" Big Pink Button is used to connect to an opponent on another computer that is accepting connections to play a game.

Disconnect


Disconnect button



The "Disconnect" Big Pink Button is used to drop the connection from your computer to an opponent on another computer. Once you have disconnected from an opponent then you can connect to another opponent or if you were accepting connections then another opponent can connect to you.

Hang Up


Hangup button



The "HangUp" Big Pink Button is used to stop accepting connections from opponents on other computers.
